Key Insights
- AI Max expands an existing Search campaign, while Performance Max can serve across multiple Google channels.
- Both need reliable qualified-lead signals, approved creative and landing pages that describe the offer accurately.
- Choose the first test from the buyer journey and available data, then compare downstream opportunities against a baseline.
A New Zealand B2B advertiser wants more leads and hears two Google product names with “Max” in them. The similarity is misleading. The first decision is where the team needs more reach and what it can measure. If qualified buyers already search for the service, expanding Search may be the logical experiment. If the business needs presence across several Google channels and has the assets and conversion data to support it, a broader campaign may be worth testing.
Google describes AI Max as features for Search campaigns. Search term matching, text customisation and final URL expansion can help those campaigns find more relevant queries and adapt ads. Performance Max is a goal-based campaign type that can use inventory across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps. Neither product changes the economics of a weak offer or an unreliable conversion event.
Start with the channel the buyer is using
Map the demand you can already see. Are prospects searching for a defined solution, comparing providers or learning that the category exists? Search captures expressed intent. A cross-channel programme can introduce or reinforce the brand while buyers move between formats. Those jobs need different creative and different expectations for the time to opportunity.
Review the current Search terms, landing pages and CRM records. If the account already converts relevant searches but misses adjacent questions, AI Max may have a clear test. If search demand is narrow and the buying cycle involves repeated education, Performance Max might broaden exposure, provided the team can inspect results and control where traffic goes. Don't choose a campaign type because the interface recommends it without understanding the buyer's stage.
Buyers assessing Google Ads support in New Zealand need to know the offer and market coverage when they arrive. If the account sends them to a generic regional page that leaves local delivery questions unanswered, the destination will confound the campaign test.
Give automation a qualified outcome
An enquiry can be cheap and still be unfit. Before enabling more reach, agree with sales on the stages: initial lead, accepted lead, qualified opportunity and won deal. Decide which stage the platform can receive reliably, with consent and data handling reviewed by the responsible team. Google's lead-generation event guidance separates generate_lead from qualify_lead for a reason.
For a niche B2B business, conversion volume may be low and sales cycles long. Don't invent a precise return on spend after two weeks. Use early signals such as accepted opportunities, account fit and relevant landing-page engagement, while tracking the later revenue outcome. When a campaign produces many forms from buyers the team can't serve, fix the optimisation signal or message before increasing budget.
Test AI Max with a controlled question
Google's AI Max experiment guidance describes a control portion of the existing Search campaign and a treatment portion with AI Max enabled. Define the metric and duration before the test. Review which features are on in the treatment: search term matching, text customisation and final URL expansion are enabled by default in the experiment setup, though campaign-level controls can be adjusted.
Final URL expansion deserves attention. Google may select a different relevant page from your domain. Audit the pages it could use and set URL controls where needed. Exclude careers, old promotions and pages with a mismatched offer. Review generated text against approved claims. If an ad implies a feature or outcome that the sales team can't deliver, the extra click volume is a liability.
Google announced new AI Max reporting in September 2026 to show the search term, creative and destination journey, with availability details to follow. Use reporting that's actually present in the account. Don't postpone a sound experiment for a promised interface, and don't claim a feature is available before checking it.
Test Performance Max for a different job
Performance Max combines assets and signals to serve across channels. That can suit a team with strong creative, clear conversion goals and a need to reach buyers beyond their immediate search. It also increases the importance of asset quality and outcome data. A text-only account with no current imagery, weak video and a generic landing page isn't ready simply because the campaign can be created.
Set a specific offer and audience hypothesis. Decide which pages are eligible, which creative claims are approved and how the campaign will be judged against existing Search and other activity. Inspect placement and channel reporting available to the account, but keep the commercial question at the centre: did the programme create more accepted opportunities from the organisations you want to serve?
Avoid comparing AI Max and Performance Max as if they were two versions of the same campaign. One extends Search; the other reaches across inventory. Run each against its own purpose, or sequence them so the team can learn from the first before adding another moving part. Compare accepted opportunities with platform results before deciding which test earned more budget.
Keep the budget decision legible. If both tests run at once, record what each campaign was meant to reach, which destinations it could use and where audiences might overlap. A later rise in leads won't tell you much if the team changed creative, landing pages and conversion definitions at the same time. When volume is too small for a clean comparison, use the sales review to decide what to test next instead of presenting a precise winner.
Decide with the sales team
Bring a sample of new leads and opportunities into the review. Sales can tell whether the account fit, project and timing were credible. Marketing can trace the query, creative and landing experience. Together they can decide whether to narrow, expand or revise the offer. A campaign that gets more forms but fewer accepted opportunities shouldn't be described as a win.
Choose Performance Max for the Job It Can Do
If you need broader Google reach and have strong creative and qualified-conversion data, test Performance Max against a clear cross-channel objective. If the problem is missed Search demand, test AI Max within Search first.
