Key Insights
- Keeping the existing client account preserves its campaign history when the old manager relationship is unlinked.
- Confirm direct access, conversion ownership and billing dependencies before changing manager links.
- Separate the access handover from campaign changes so performance problems can be traced to their cause.
You've chosen a new Google Ads agency, but the outgoing team created the account and manages everything through its own login structure. Finance receives the invoices, marketing receives the reports and nobody internally has recently checked who can administer the client account.
The transition needs more than an export of campaign settings. A Vietnamese business should retain a working route into its existing account and understand the services that account borrows from its agency. Campaign history can remain intact while conversion measurement or billing breaks during an unplanned unlink.
Before agreeing a handover date, inspect the actual account. The contract and the platform need to describe a transition the incoming team can carry out without relying on assumptions about ownership.
Locate the client account and test direct access
Record the client account's customer ID and the business users who can sign in. Ask an authorised internal user to open the account directly and inspect its access settings. A report link or access to an agency dashboard doesn't establish that the company can manage the account itself.
Give access through individual company-controlled identities. Keep recovery arrangements with the business and remove reliance on a departed employee's address. Access should survive the end of an agency contract and the absence of any single internal contact.
Identify the manager accounts linked above the client. The incoming agency will normally manage the existing client account through its own manager relationship. Creating a fresh account simply because an agency has changed can leave the business comparing separate histories unnecessarily.
Google's manager ownership guidance distinguishes administrative ownership from ordinary manager linking. Ownership gives a manager additional administrative capabilities; linking doesn't automatically make every manager an owner. Confirm the present arrangement in the interface before requesting changes.
Preserve the account before removing a relationship
Keep the client account in place while the agencies agree the access sequence. Google's unlinking guidance says unlinking a manager doesn't remove the client account's campaign history. That makes retaining the existing account the starting point for continuity.
Prepare a dated reference of the current setup. Include active campaigns, budgets and conversion goals, together with the most recent changes the outgoing team made. An export is a reference for comparison, not a replacement for continued account access.
Ask the outgoing team to identify scripts, automated rules and reporting connections it maintains. Some may be owned outside the Ads account. Decide whether each should continue, be replaced or stop, and record who will monitor the replacement.
A Google Ads agency handover in Vietnam should leave the business able to explain who can make changes and how its reporting is produced. Access continuity matters because the account remains part of the company's marketing infrastructure after the supplier changes.
Trace conversions to their actual owner
List the conversion actions used by active campaigns and identify where each originates. A conversion may belong to the client account, be imported from analytics or come from a manager-level setup. Similar action names can conceal different sources.
Google warns that manager-owned cross-account tracking stops recording conversions from clicks after unlinking. Earlier clicks can still be recorded within their conversion window. Have the incoming team establish and test the intended replacement before the manager relationship changes.
Inspect the website and tag-management access needed to maintain that measurement. The company may have Ads access while the outgoing agency still controls the container or the only working integration. Record the property, container and action identifiers so the incoming team can distinguish the real implementation from an old diagram.
Agree how genuine business outcomes are recognised. A form submission test can confirm delivery, but it doesn't prove that an accepted lead or offline sale reaches Ads correctly. Follow a permitted test through the relevant systems and document any stage that can't be verified before cutover.
Confirm who pays before unlinking
Billing needs its own owner in the handover. Identify the payment arrangement, the entity responsible for it and whether the outgoing manager is involved. Finance should understand when the old responsibility ends and when the new one begins.
For monthly invoicing, Google says serving stops if the paying manager is unlinked before a replacement billing setup is established. Resolve that dependency before removing the link. Don't assume that adding the incoming agency supplies a valid payment arrangement.
Check the final responsibility for historical charges and the route for obtaining invoices. Those commercial obligations need agreement between the parties; a platform permission change doesn't settle them. Keep the relevant finance contact involved through the first billing cycle after transition.
If the intended billing arrangement isn't ready, change the transition sequence. A controlled delay is easier to manage than an unexplained interruption while the marketing team continues to report that campaigns are live.
Review audiences and connected assets
Ask which audiences are shared from the outgoing manager. Google warns that unlinking can remove access to shared lists and affect campaigns using them. Decide which audience dependencies require replacement before the access change.
Review analytics links, product feeds and landing-page systems where the programme uses them. Each asset needs a clear access owner and a maintenance route. The task is to establish dependencies, not to grant every new supplier unrestricted access to every system.
Have the incoming agency document which controls it can actually use. Someone may be able to edit campaigns but be unable to change a feed or repair a conversion event. Make that limitation visible while the outgoing team can still answer questions.
Keep credentials out of handover documents. Use the platforms' permission systems and provide the minimum roles needed for the agreed work. A spreadsheet containing shared passwords creates a separate problem the account transition doesn't require.
Stabilise the handover before changing the strategy
Choose a transition window with time to inspect serving and measurement afterwards. Record when access, billing and conversion changes occur. If the business also needs an urgent campaign change, record it separately with its purpose and owner.
Avoid treating the first week as an opportunity to rebuild everything. If bids, landing pages and conversion goals all change together, an unexpected performance movement becomes harder to explain. Prioritise the corrections required to keep the programme operating and schedule broader tests with a baseline.
Inspect the account after the old relationship is removed. Confirm the company can sign in, the incoming team has the intended access and campaigns are serving where expected. Follow the next genuine enquiries through the measurement route rather than relying entirely on a test-event screenshot.
Choose a Google Ads Agency That Leaves You in Control
Agree completion evidence before the handover starts: working company access, documented dependencies and verified operation after the change. Keep someone inside the business accountable for that evidence even when both agencies are cooperating.
